Watkins has built two very different salt systems — the older cell-based ACE and the newer cartridge-based FreshWater. Here's how they compare on mechanism, maintenance rhythm, annual costs, and what replacement looks like.
When the ACE cell on a Hot Spring spa dies, you have three realistic paths: the OEM 76078 cell, a verified compatible cell, or converting to a universal drop-in salt system. Here is how to choose between them.
An ACE-specific symptom map: low chlorine, cell faults, erratic salt readings, output resets, and dead systems — the likely causes, the fixes, and how to tell the cell from the controller.
ACE systems target 1,750 ppm — well below what you can taste. Why the number is what it is, the symptoms of too much or too little salt, and how to correct the level without overshooting.
The official ACE cell lifespan is 2–3 years — but usage, output level, and calcium decide where you land. The seven factors, the cost-per-year math, and when to replace proactively.
The ACE system's diamond electrode needs a 90-day descale to keep making chlorine. Here's the full ritual — supplies, steps, and the signs a cleaning won't save the cell.
An aftermarket ACE cell isn't inherently risky — but it isn't automatically fine either. Here's what a compatible cell must get right, how to vet any seller, and what to check in your warranty terms.
The ACE salt system spans a dozen part numbers, from the 76078 cell to test strips. This parts-desk cheat sheet explains what each one does, when it needs replacing, and which jobs are DIY.
Every Hot Spring and Limelight spa that shipped with the ACE salt system uses the same 76078 cell. Here is the full model-by-model, year-by-year compatibility chart, plus how to confirm your spa's model year.
Everything an ACE-equipped Hot Spring or Limelight owner needs in one place: how the system works, the 1,750 ppm salt target, the maintenance calendar, and every cell replacement path.
