Hot Tub Salt Calculator

Hot Tub Salt Calculator

Quickly estimate how much salt your hot tub needs from your spa’s real water volume and current salt level, then confirm with a test before adding anything.

Enter values and select Calculate.

Formula: salt (lb) = gallons × (target ppm − current ppm) × 8.3454 / 1,000,000. The conversion factor is the density of water in lb per US gallon; real-world results vary with water volume, existing dissolved solids and measurement error. Confirm with a suitable test before use.

Which salt system fits your spa?

Choose your situation, enter your water volume, then select Show my match.

Recommendations match Zelinhol’s current product line: the generator rated for tubs and swim spas up to 2,500 gallons, the Zelinhol replacement cell for existing Zelinhol generators, and the ACE replacement cell for the ACE 76078 system on Hot Spring spas.

Targets collected from manufacturer manuals, FAQs and official guidance; midpoint presets are marked. Always confirm against your own manual before dosing.

How to use the result

  1. Confirm actual water volume rather than relying on the spa’s advertised capacity.
  2. Measure current salt level using a suitable test method.
  3. Add salt gradually, circulate as directed, and retest.
  4. Follow the generator manual for operating range and safety checks.

Frequently asked questions

How much salt does my hot tub need?

It depends on your spa’s actual water volume, your current salt level, and the operating range your salt system targets. Enter those three numbers in the calculator above for a first estimate, then confirm with a suitable test before adding anything.

How do I find my hot tub’s actual water volume?

Advertised capacities are often marketing maximums. Measure the filled spa’s dimensions and average depth, or check your manual for the operational volume. Using the real volume prevents large dosing errors.

Why is my salt level different from what the calculator predicted?

Real-world results vary with dissolved solids, incomplete mixing, and measurement error. Circulate the water as directed, let it fully mix, then retest before adding more salt.

What salt level does the Hot Spring ACE system target?

ACE-equipped Hot Spring and Limelight spas are designed around a much lower target of about 1,750 ppm – well below the taste threshold. If you have an ACE system, pick the ACE preset above (it sets the target for you) and see our ACE salt level guide for details.

What salt level do other brands’ salt systems target?

Hot tub systems cluster between about 1,200 and 2,500 ppm: Hot Spring ACE and FreshWater target about 1,750 ppm, Gecko in.clear (a bromide system) about 1,450 ppm, Arctic Spas Onzen 1,500–1,800 ppm, Master Spas Master Clear about 1,200 ppm, and Solaxx Saltron Mini 2,000–2,500 ppm. Swim spa and pool systems run higher — Saltron Retro, CircuPool, Pentair and Hayward units typically target 3,000–4,500 ppm. Pick your system in the preset list above to load its number, or see the reference table above.

What kind of salt should I use in a salt water hot tub?

Use only the salt type and purity your generator’s manual specifies. Never assume table salt or de-icing salt is acceptable, because impurities can affect water chemistry and equipment.

Is the calculator result accurate enough to dose by?

No. It is a first estimate only. Add salt gradually, circulate, retest, and follow your manual’s operating range and safety instructions at every step.
