Say Goodbye to Green Spa Water: The Smarter, Simpler Solution

The smarter, simpler solution for crystal-clear spa water without draining and refilling every month.

You open the cover, and the water is green. Not faintly tinted, not "maybe a little off" — actually green. Before you drain the spa in despair, know this: green water is almost always fixable in 24-48 hours without draining, and it is much easier to prevent next time.

Why spa water turns green

Green water is algae. Algae is a plant. Plants need nitrogen, phosphorus, sunlight, and warm temperatures. A spa with the cover off on a sunny day, with bathers bringing in body oils and sweat (nitrogen source), is an algae farm waiting to happen. Once a single algae spore finds those conditions, it multiplies by orders of magnitude per hour. The water goes from clear to pea-soup in two days.

The 24-hour rescue protocol

Step 1: test the water. You need to know free chlorine, pH, and alkalinity before you do anything. Step 2: balance pH to 7.2-7.4. Chlorine is far less effective above 7.6, so if pH is high, no amount of chlorine will clear the green. Step 3: shock at 3-5x normal chlorine level and run the jets. Step 4: brush the spa walls and floor. Algae film protects it from chlorine; brushing breaks the film. Step 5: wait 12-24 hours with the cover off and the jets running. By morning, the water should be back to cloudy-white, then clear by day two.

Why the green keeps coming back

If you clear the green, use the spa, and it comes back in a week, your chlorine level is too low between uses. Algae spores are always present in the water; chlorine at 1-3 ppm keeps them dormant. The moment chlorine drops below 0.5 ppm, dormant algae wake up. Hand-dosing chlorine tablets cannot reliably hold 1-3 ppm between weekly shock treatments.

The structural fix: continuous low-level chlorine

A salt chlorine generator produces a steady stream of HOCl every hour the system runs. That steady stream keeps the chlorine level in the 1-3 ppm window continuously, not in spikes. Algae never get the chance to wake up, so the water stays clear between uses. The Zelinhol salt cell for ACE systems maintains this steady residual automatically, which is why owners stop seeing green water after the switch.

What about phosphate removers and algaecides?

Phosphate removers starve algae of a key nutrient and slow regrowth. They are useful as a backup. Algaecides (typically copper-based or polyquat) kill algae on contact but do nothing for the root cause: chlorine that dips too low between uses. If you find yourself adding algaecide monthly, the fix is a salt cell, not more algaecide.

One-time green-to-clear checklist

Test, balance pH, shock hard, brush, run jets with cover off for 24 hours, then install a salt chlorine generator so it never happens again. Draining and refilling is rarely necessary unless TDS climbs roughly 1,500 ppm above your fill water’s baseline (about 4,000 ppm total for a salt water spa) or the water smells chemically burnt.
